So much of the penis conversation revolves around length—whether it really matters, if bigger is better, the whole nine yards (well, hopefully not actually nine yards!). Penis girth is like a middle child: sometimes neglected but still just as important. Thankfully, researchers at King’s College of London made sure to include this overlooked measure of penis size when they analyzed studies of average penis dimensions then published the results in BJU International.

The researchers reviewed 17 studies that measured the penises of a combined 15,521 men. The men were all measured by health professionals using the same standard procedure to ensure the numbers were as accurate as possible.

And now, for the results! The average flaccid girth (or circumference, so the entire penis around), was 3.67 inches. That’s about the same size as the thickest part of an electric toothbrush. The erect circumference got a bit of a boost, and was 4.59 inches around. For that one, you can picture the size of a tube of toothpaste.

There are some caveats to this review, mainly that the studies didn’t control for things like temperature, level of arousal, and previous ejaculation. Still, this is the most comprehensive penis-size review so far, so it deserves some attention.

Whether your guy’s got more of a baby carrot or a cucumber, there’s always a way to make sex feel incredible for both of you but we can never have enough sex studies..right?
