The spooning position can really take on various angles, wether with the womans legs wide open so she can recieve all of the mans penis or directly behind in a more traditional sense or lifting the women somewhat so you get more of a doffy position effect. The traditional spooning position may not be ideal for small to average men since much of the length is lost in the motion being directly behind.
